Spaghetti Bolognese

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small carrot, finely chopped

  • 14 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 1 grated Parmesan cheese, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium heat until it is browned and crumbled. Remove the beef from the pot and drain off any excess fat.
  2. In the same pot, add the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Cook the vegetables over medium heat until they are softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir to combine. If using, add the red wine.
  4. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer the sauce for 30 minutes, or until it has thickened.
  5. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook it according to the package instructions.
  6. Drain the spaghetti and add it to the pot with the sauce. Toss the spaghetti and sauce together until the spaghetti is well coated.
  7. Serve the spaghetti bolognese hot, with grated Parmesan cheese on top.
